Lakeville hot rod boutique revs up best passion
With a fender here and a steering wheel there, each of the projects in the garage at Dicks Hot Rod Shop awaits its mechanical redemption. Old cars, Dick Clemmer says, are like people each one of them is different. Clemmer is the owner and brainchild of Dicks Hot Rod Shop in Lakeville, a former garbage-truck garage turned into a one-stop repair shop for vintage cars. In addition to a complete restoration shop, Dicks also has a state-of-the-art paint facility that it shares with Korba Auto Body, a bodywork shop in the same building. Clemmer also owns Dicks Sanitation in Lakeville. After running the business for many years, he found himself with time to spare after family members became more involved in the day-to-day operations. The hot-rod bug unexpectedly bit him on a trip home from Jesse James Days in Northfield. Someone was selling a 1947 Ford on the side of the road, and the more Clemmer thought about it, the more he wanted to make the car his own. After some back-and-forth with the owner, the car was on its way to Lakeville. One of the truck mechanics working in the [Dicks Sanitation] garage said he would be happy to help me work on it, Clemmer said. So he did that part-time and worked on the garbage trucks part time.
